So this morning, I decided to try self hypnosis as my med practice. Its kinda cool. You put your eyeballs up into your forehead to access REM (rapid eye movement). That gets you into a hypnotic state, which basically means suggestive; open to positive suggestion.

This one was by Marissa Peer and was titled ‘Bulletproof Yourself Against Rejection’. She has you reconnecting with your inner child and visiting your home between the ages of 2 and 8 years old. I found it evocative and then you revisit 3 different scenarios where as a child you felt rejected or bullied. And each scenario, you get younger, or more regressed. It was interesting. It obviously just your memory of the situation so it doesn’t mean its true.

My experience of this technique:

I went back to being a baby and to my exhausted tired mother who was struggling with post partum and therefore I felt I couldn’t connect with her. It was as if she wasn’t there. I also had a memory of being a year old toddler and being left in my cot to cry because on that particular night my mother had nothing left in the tank to attend to me. Then I was 5 years old and I was having nightmares about witches and I’d climb into bed with my Mum but she couldn’t sleep, so she’d walk me back to my bed.

The follow up technique:

The idea is you then rewrite the story, so as your adult self, you scoop up your inner child, welcome him/her into your home where you currently live and then you revisit the scenarios and rewrite the story. So its not about rejection of you as a person, you see the situation for what it really is. If you were bullied, you connect with the unhappiness of the bully for example, or the post partum…

I think it’s a really interesting technique to rewire your brain, especially if you are prone to negative thinking. I’m realising more and more, that your mind responds emotionally to your thoughts, so healthy thinking = healthy mind.

If you close your eyes and imagine biting into a lemon, the juiciness, the flesh, the sourness hitting your tongue, your mouth starts to water. Its the same with your thoughts around your self image and your self esteem.

Daily reminders to keep it positive.
